Who We Are
A collective of academic researchers and cultural historians focused on somatic practices. Founded by Angie Jones, the platform emerged from a decade of ethnographic study into global bodywork traditions.
AngieJonesShiatsu is an academic platform dedicated to the theoretical study of body awareness, cultural wellness practices, and the historical perspectives of physical traditions. Our courses focus on cultural context, conceptual frameworks, and scholarly analysis, providing descriptive knowledge without offering personal treatment advice or therapeutic guidance.
We examine Shiatsu and related bodywork traditions through a cultural and historical lens. Our content explores their philosophical roots, evolution within different societies, and their role as cultural artifacts. The approach is analytical and educational, designed to foster understanding of these practices as part of broader wellness and somatic traditions.
No. Our curriculum is strictly theoretical and academic. We provide knowledge about the history, cultural significance, and conceptual models underlying various body awareness practices. We do not teach hands-on techniques, provide certification, or offer guidance for personal application or treatment. For practical training, please seek accredited instructional institutions.
Our studies encompass a wide range of global traditions, including but not limited to: East Asian meridian theory and its cultural context, Mediterranean historical approaches to somatic awareness, Indigenous North American movement philosophies, and the socio-cultural analysis of modern mindfulness movements. Each is studied for its historical development and conceptual framework.
The platform is designed for students, researchers, academics, and lifelong learners interested in the anthropology, history, and sociology of bodywork and wellness. It is ideal for those seeking a deeper, scholarly understanding of how physical traditions are shaped by and reflect their cultural environments, without the objective of clinical or therapeutic skill acquisition.

To deconstruct and document the theoretical underpinnings of body awareness and cultural wellness practices, making academic perspectives on physical traditions accessible and rigorously contextualized.
Academic integrity, cultural respect, and descriptive clarity. We value historical accuracy, avoid prescriptive advice, and prioritize understanding the 'why' behind practices across different societies.
Thoughtful, inquisitive, and grounded. The tone is scholarly yet engaging, fostering a space for intellectual curiosity about the body's role in cultural history and collective consciousness.
We exclusively focus on theoretical and historical education. We do not offer treatment, techniques, or personal guidance. Our distinction lies in deep cultural analysis, not application.
